Who wants to spread some joy in those dark times we live in? Since we're all stuck at home anyway, why not try for a new penfriendship via good old snail mail?
My name is Sophie and I'm 28. I'm currently doing my PhD at a German University and work part-time as a freelance editor. In the times before the big C, my life was busy, with lots of stuff to do - these days my boyfriend and I pretty much just hang around in our apartment, which tends to get a little boring, despite the chance to read, watch movies, play music (I play the piano and the cello) and try my hand at different craft projects. I even took up some literary writing, but all of this doesn't quite replace social contacts, travelling, going hiking in the mountains or visiting friends and family. So I thought this could be my chance to get back into penpalling!
I've been penpalling for quite a few years, but it has become quiet around my old penpals. And frankly: I miss it! Getting to know a person merely on a piece of paper and building up a friendship is special.
What I can offer is long letters with insights about me and my country, random facts about my PhD-topic, recommendations of B-movies and Metal music, doodles and puns and transcripts of long-winded thinking processes on things that occupy my mind. I would love to share conversations with a penpal that go below the surface. I do realise that you can't force that kind of relationship, but I think it's worth giving it a shot!

One of my favorite things to do, is ask people what they would do in ridiculous

answers so many people come up with - it gives so much insight into what kind of
person they are, and what their processes are for problem-solving.
In general, I don't quite fit in wherever I go - I often feel like I don't have
a lot in common with other people. But that could also be due to the fact that
I hate small talk so much that I don't usually put a lot of effort into meeting
new people. I find small talk to be such a waste of time and such a drain to my
energy. I do really enjoy having serious and meaningful conversations with
people who want to develop deep friendship, and not just to make an acquaintance
who you will never care about seeing again. I believe that true friends are few
and far between, but when found, are something far more valuable than all the
gold in the world.
